If Not now, when? Engaging teens in meaningful social justice work

For over fifty years, the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs has worked to combat poverty, racism, and anti-Semitism in partnership with Chicago’s diverse communities. Or Tzedek seeks to actively engage teens in JCUA mission and work. We focus on building the skills for meaningful community organizing by looking at a root cause analysis of social justice issues. Teens come away equipped to be agents of positive systemic change. Every program we run builds a community of teen activists passionate about making Chicago a more just city. In this workshop, we’ll talk about some of our successes and challenges in doing this work, including how we talk about privilege, root causes, and systems of oppression in our community and how we become effective allies. Hear from teen alumni of the program about what stays with them from their experiences and how it’s changed not only how they think about Jewish social justice, but how they engage their family and communities in this work as well.
